The Characteristics of Ritual Kinsmen in a Small Community

A marriage pattern project aimed at reaching generalizations from a study of marriages since 1819 or so, regarding:

  • systems of family alliances (presumably faction-producing);
  • preferential qualities in mate (age, residence, etc.);
  • changing exogamy-endogamy rates;
  • preferential qualities in padrino-padrina; and
  • cycles of marriage frequency.

The goal is to derive from these sources genealogical data in such a form that one can easily plot the relationships between families or surnanes group by generation; data on spouse age, residence, civil status, and data of marriage; names of spouses; and to reach conclusions based on the quantitative data. The town studied consisted of four control and adjoining barrios of the municipality of Canaman in Camarines Sur Province.
