Abstract

This forum presents the salient findings of the research titled "Knowledge Needs, Acquisition, and Use among the Catholic Bishops of the Philippines" jointly conducted by the Institute of Philippine Culture (IPC) and the John J. Carroll Institute on Church and Social Issues (JJCICSI). During face-to-face interviews with them within the period March 2014 to March 2015, 62 active Catholic bishops of the Philippines shared their insights and opinions on: the social issues that are most important to them; their information needs on social issues; the sources of information they privilege and those they do not; their personal views on issues tackled in the 2014 Synod of Bishops on the Family, such as marriages in crisis and homosexual unions; their personal views on the the Responsible Parenthood and Reproductive Health Act of 2012 or the "RH Law" (Republic Act No. 10354) and on the Anti [LGBT]-Discrimination Bill (House Bill 110); and their personal views on statements of Pope Francis.

This forum will be held a day after the conclusion of the October 4-25, 2015 Fourteenth Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops with the theme "The Vocation and Mission of the Family in the Church and the Contemporary World." It will be the IPC's and the JJCICSI's joint contribution to the discussion on family issues raised during the 2015 Vatican Synod on the Family.
